Laboratory Safety

Policy

The purpose of the Laboratory Safety Program is to ensure that laboratory workers are informed about the hazards in their workplace and that exposures to these hazards are minimized or reduced to negligible levels. This standard applies to all science and engineering laboratories at Rensselaer.

The University's Laboratory safety program is structured to ensure compliance with the OSHA Chemical Hygiene Regulations. The specific University requirements for laboratory safety are contained in the University’s Chemical Hygiene Plan and its Appendices.

Training

Personnel including students who work in wet laboratory chemical environments are at a minimum expected to participate in the following training:

  • Laboratory Safety
  • Personnel Protective Equipment
  • Hazardous Material Handling and Disposal

Additionally the Principal Investigator is expected to provide or ensure training is provided in the safety aspects of the protocols being used in the research work. Special training such as Biosafety and Radiation Safety may be needed for work with hazardous agents other than chemicals.
