At Rensselaer, we maintain that “leadership” involves a learnable set of actions and behaviors that is available to everyone. Whether it be leading a particular project or initiative, assisting others in overcoming obstacles and capitalizing on opportunities, or catalyzing co-creation with colleagues, Rensselaer community members model leadership every day. In this workshop, participants will explore the tenants that comprise everyday leadership and discuss the behaviors that define leadership not as positional or based on title, but rather on values and actions.

In this seminar, Managers and Supervisors will learn from each other and our Facilitators about important topics such as the Employee Value Proposition and Employee Experience, the six fundamental Leadership competencies at Rensselaer, and experience a “day in the life” of a Supervisor. In addition, the importance of managing employee performance, providing both rewards and recognition, employment law fundamentals and tools for building team capacity will be explored.
Description: Much of a leader’s work is accomplished through daily conversations with team members and others. These interactions, especially the tough ones, often involve intensely personal feelings (on both sides) that have an impact on the practical outcome of the conversation and the personal connection between the leader and the person. The leader’s level of emotional intelligence—the ability to manage oneself and one’s relationships—is a critical factor in the success of these tough conversations. Part 1 of 2.
