RPI's Core Competencies

RPI’s core competencies outline the skills, knowledge, abilities, and behaviors required to successfully perform a specific job or role and accomplish established goals. 

Competencies are a fundamental component to performance success because they provide structure, clarity, and alignment. Competencies encourage employees to take ownership of their performance by understanding the direct link between their actions and their performance outcomes.

RPI’s competencies are based on specific job categories and are outlined below: 

Job Categories

Customer Focus

  • Is courteous and works well with customers and co-workers
  • Ability to understand and meet the needs of internal and external customers
  • Establishes and maintains personal relationships with customers to gain trust, respect and obtain customer information for use in improvement of service delivery

Personal Credibility

  • Complies with time and attendance requirements
  • Respects rights of co-workers and customers
  • Exhibits pride in services provided and speaks positively of RPI
  • Follows-through on commitments and service promises
  • Strictly protects confidentiality and privacy of information and people
  • Acknowledges and expresses appreciation for excellent service received from others 

Commitment to Teamwork and Support of Diversity

  • Develops and maintains cooperative relationships within the organization; treats all people with respect
  • Demonstrates flexibility in work practices, procedures or processes
  • Works effectively with others to accomplish tasks and goals; finds solutions to problems

  • Assesses situations, considers alternatives and chooses appropriate course of action

Business Acumen

  • Continually enhances knowledge and skill to keep abreast of industry changes, developments and emerging issues
  • Understands what it takes to be successful in higher education and at RPI
  • Has a thorough knowledge of RPI's mission, history, strategic plan, as well as constituencies and stakeholders of RPI

Strategic Thinking/Planning

  • Formulates effective strategies consistent with the Portfolio Initiatives
  • Sees the big picture and holds a long-term perspective
  • Determines objectives and sets priorities; anticipates potential threats or opportunities
  • Aligns department to support Institute goals
  • Drives the execution of strategic plans and monitors results

  • Shares information, advice, and suggestions to help others to be more successful; provides effective coaching;
