Career Movement at RPI
Career movement at RPI provides opportunities for employees to grow, develop new skills, and take on new responsibilities. Career movement may occur through reclassification, promotion, or lateral movement and may be initiated by applying for an open position, organizational or departmental changes, or a position review when a role has significantly evolved.

A change to an existing position resulting from a significant and sustained change in the duties, responsibilities, scope, or level of work performed. A reclassification typically results in a new position title and may also include a change in job level, as determined through a position review.
The movement of an employee into a higher-level position with greater responsibility, scope, or complexity. Promotions typically occur through a competitive recruitment process and generally involve advancement to a higher job level.
The movement of an employee from one position to another at the same job level. Lateral moves provide opportunities to gain new skills, broaden experience, or meet organizational needs while maintaining a comparable level of responsibility. A lateral move may or may not involve a change in position title or department.
