Rensselaer’s Flexible Work Arrangement Policy promotes employee engagement and supports work-life balance, while maintaining the high quality of service and responsiveness that enables the attainment of the Institute’s goals. Employees and managers both have key roles in establishing successful flexible work arrangements.
Expectations for Employees
- Be well-informed. Read the Flexible Work Arrangement Policy (HR Policy 700.6) and our flexible work resources to learn about the options and process for requesting flexible work.
- Discuss your interest in flexible work with your supervisor. In addition to the Institute’s Flexible Work Arrangement Policy, there may be specific guidelines in place within each division or academic school that need to be considered.
- Consider which flexible work arrangements are feasible. Together with your supervisor, you will assess the duties and responsibilities of your position to identify what flexible work arrangements are possible. Changes in work location or schedule should not impact productivity, customer service, operational efficiency, or team collaboration, and must not transfer task responsibilities to other employees.
- Submit a Flexible Work Agreement. Before submitting the Flexible Work Agreement, be sure you have discussed the request with your supervisor.
Expectations for Managers
- Be well-informed. Read the Flexible Work Arrangement Policy (HR Policy 700.6) and and our flexible work resources to learn about the options and process for requesting flexible work.
- Support your employees. Flexible work options can help staff balance work and personal responsibilities while meeting business needs and objectives. Additionally, flexible work arrangements may promote employee productivity and improve employee job satisfaction and retention.
- Review our “Resources for Managing Flexible Work,” including the guidance on assessing position eligibility for flexible work.
