Setting Up an Alternative Work Location

If you do not typically work at an alternate work location, you may experience challenges adjusting to a different environment. Proper equipment and a comfortable workspace are critical for ensuring an employee’s success working from an alternate work location.

Equipment

Employees pursuing a flexible work arrangement will work with their supervisor to identify what equipment is needed. If Institute equipment is provided, each piece of equipment must be listed in the Flexible Work Agreement and must be returned upon termination of the flexible work arrangement and/or separation of employment or at any time when requested by the Institute.

Employees must return equipment in the same condition in which it was originally received, minus normal wear and tear. Institute insurance will not cover any personal property used at an alternate work location and will only cover damage to Institute equipment listed in the Flexible Work Agreement. Rensselaer does not provide home internet or phone service to support flexible work arrangements.

Ergonomic Workspaces

Employees should maintain an ergonomically appropriate and safe home workspace:

  • Choose a location that has limited distractions and ample natural lighting.
  • Maintain good posture where you sit.
  • Build physical movement into your day by taking microbreaks (five-minute breaks every hour).
